Revisions to Unity’s Policy
In the wake of ambiguous apologies, Unity has promptly enacted considerable revisions to its newly introduced runtime fee policy, a mere week following its original proclamation. Marc Whitten, the head of Unity Create, initiated the statement with an apology and recognition that a broader consultation with developers should have been conducted prior to decision-making.
The restructured policy introduces significant allowances:
- Subscribers to Unity Personal are now exempt from the fee.
- The revenue benchmark has been elevated from $100,000 to $200,000.
- Games that yield less than $1 million in annual revenue will not be subjected to the fee.
- The fee is designated solely for games developed using the upcoming version of Unity, scheduled for launch in 2024.
Unity’s Updated Model
Whitten elaborated that existing games and projects will remain unaffected by these fees unless upgraded to the forthcoming Unity version. This signifies that fees will not be imposed retrospectively on games already circulating in the market.
For games that are liable for fees, developers are presented with alternatives:
- Contribute 2.5% of the revenue.
- A determined sum is contingent on the influx of new players each month.
The responsibility to report these metrics falls on the developers.
While the alterations have been welcomed positively, it is still uncertain whether Unity has effectively redeemed its standing following the initial disclosure. The preliminary policy had proposed a fee for every installation of a game developed with Unity, inciting a wave of disapproval across social media platforms. To elucidate these modifications, Unity has refreshed its Frequently Asked Questions page.
