Dragon’s Dogma 2: Preview of Capcom’s Anticipated Sequel
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the highly anticipated sequel to the original action RPG developed by Capcom. Following a recent preview, it is clear that the game sticks to the Dark Arisen template to a pleasant but almost surprising degree. While some may argue that this lack of significant departure is too safe, others find the familiar gameplay refreshing and enjoyable. With a new map split across two nations, Dragon’s Dogma 2 brings a visual upgrade, although it falls slightly behind other recent RPGs like Final Fantasy XVI in terms of graphics.
A Familiar World with a Fresh Look
The demo for Dragon’s Dogma 2 showcased a starting base that looks remarkably similar to The Encampment featured in the original game. However, a two-generation gap provides a significant visual improvement, adding character and depth to the environments. The new map is split across Vermund and Bhattal, two nations that players will have the opportunity to explore.
Exploring Vermund, players encounter a village that has recently been ravaged by a dragon. The game sets the tone effectively through cutscenes, even without watching the introduction. Unfortunately, during the preview, it was difficult to assess how reactive NPCs were since there were limited opportunities to interact with them. However, the visual enhancements and lovely environments make the exploration enjoyable.
Party Dynamics and Seamless Transitions
Like its predecessor, Dragon’s Dogma 2 features a party system consisting of Pawns, AI-controlled characters who remain loyal to the Arisen. The main Pawn levels up alongside the player, and two additional Pawns can be hired within The Rift. An exciting feature of Dragon’s Dogma 2 is the seamless transition when swapping out Pawns using Riftstones, eliminating the need for loading screens.
In online mode, players can benefit from Pawns who have knowledge of completed quests with other players. This adds a nice touch to both combat and exploration, as the Pawns can share useful information and strategies.
Familiar Combat Mechanics with New Visuals
The combat mechanics in Dragon’s Dogma 2 remain familiar to the original game. However, the updated visuals and improved graphics enhance the overall experience on the PS5. Players can choose from multiple starting vocations, each with its capabilities and skills. Mages, for example, can provide temporary elemental magical buffs, increasing weapon damage with electricity and fire.
While the combat remains entertaining and rewarding, the lack of a lock-on option for enemies may be a minor drawback. Archers, on the other hand, can rely on auto-targeting with quickfire shots. More potent skills, such as barrage shots for striking multiple enemies, require manual aim. This adds a strategic element to combat as players need to balance stamina and charging time for these powerful attacks.
Challenges and Rewards
Dragon’s Dogma 2 presents players with challenging battles, including formidable enemies such as ogres and cyclopes. Some enemies even target specific attributes of characters, adding an additional layer of complexity to combat. Climbing on these large foes creates exciting moments as players attempt to hold on while the enemy tries to shake them off.
Although battles can become lengthy and feel like a slog at times, the rewards and sense of accomplishment make overcoming them worthwhile. However, defeat can be embarrassing, as our demo ended with the Arisen being grabbed, thrown to the ground, and covered in slobber.
A Familiar Experience with Room for Evolution
While Dragon’s Dogma 2 offers a fresh story and setting, some may find it almost too familiar in terms of gameplay. The developers have maintained the core mechanics from the original game, which may disappoint those hoping for a more significant evolution. However, the new map, improved visuals, and engaging combat still make for an enjoyable experience.
It is important to note that this is only a preview, and the full game may offer more surprises and evolutions beyond what the demo revealed. For fans who have eagerly awaited the sequel for over a decade, Dragon’s Dogma 2 promises to deliver an entertaining journey.
