Virtual Desktop Now Supports Quest 3 & Includes VRChat Face Tracking

Virtual Update Takes Advantage of Quest 3 and Quest Pro

Virtual Update, the popular app created by Guy Godin, has just received a major update to fully utilize the capabilities of the Oculus Quest 3 and Quest Pro headsets. Since the launch of the original Oculus Quest in 2019, Virtual Desktop has been a preferred choice among PC VR users, offering features that even the built-in Air Link on the Quest headsets couldn’t match.

The latest update for the Quest 3, powered by the new Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, introduces several enhancements. One notable addition is the support for the AV1 video codec, which provides better image quality at the same bitrate as the HEVC codec. However, it should be noted that AV1 is currently only supported by NVIDIA RTX 40-series and AMD Radeon RX 7000 series GPUs. Godin states that AV1 also offers more stable frame times, resulting in a smoother locomotion experience in VR, albeit with a slightly higher demand on the GPU compared to other codecs.

Quest 2 Quest Pro Quest 3
H.264+ 400 Mbps 400 Mbps 400 Mbps
HEVC 150 Mbps 150 Mbps 200 Mbps
AV1 200 Mbps
6GHz Wi-Fi

In addition, the update enables users to utilize the Godlike quality setting at 120 Hz and apply Super Resolution upscaling with any quality setting. The Quest 3 also boasts improved Wi-Fi performance over previous standalone headsets, resulting in smoother streaming experiences.

In fact, Godin himself declares that the Quest 3 is the best headset for wireless PC VR, taking full advantage of Virtual Desktop’s capabilities.

However, this update isn’t exclusive to Quest 3 users. For the Quest Pro, it adds a highly requested feature for VRChat users. The update allows the forward-facing of the headset’s face and eye tracking data to the PC version of VRChat, enhancing the social VR experience. This feature complements the previous June update, which introduced support for the Quest Pro’s local dimming feature.

With these updates, Virtual Update continues to solidify its position as the go-to app for PC VR users, offering a seamless and immersive experience for both the Oculus Quest 3 and Quest Pro.
