Annual Release of Diablo 4 DLCs

Diablo 4 is Emulating Destiny 2

Blizzard Entertainment has made it clear that Diablo 4 will be heavily focused on live service elements, but fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that paid expansions will still be a part of the franchise. In an interview with Dexerto, franchise general manager Rod Fergusson confirmed that premium Diablo 4 DLC will be released annually, alongside quarterly seasons.

Fergusson explained, “When you look at the launch of the game and this first season, we see that as building a foundation on which we can build for the future. So, as we look at our quarterly seasons, and we look at our annual expansions, those are the things that we’re really focused on for our live service.”

This news shouldn’t come as a complete surprise, as Fergusson had previously mentioned that premium DLC would be coming to Diablo 4, but the timing and frequency of these expansions were unknown. With the confirmation of yearly DLC releases, Diablo 4 appears to be taking inspiration from Destiny 2’s successful model.

Destiny 2, developed by Bungie, has followed a similar pattern since 2019, with expansions and seasons releasing regularly. Fergusson even referred to Destiny 2 as a “great inspiration to look at” when discussing the future of Diablo 4’s DLC.

While this approach aligns with current industry trends, it marks a departure from Diablo’s past. Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 each had one expansion, namely Lord of Destruction and Reaper of Souls, respectively. The shift towards annual expansions and quarterly seasons indicates Blizzard’s commitment to providing ongoing content and support for Diablo 4.

What Can Players Expect?

The introduction of Diablo 4 DLC and seasons will offer players a continuous stream of new content and experiences. Here’s what fans can anticipate:

  • Yearly Paid Expansions: With premium DLC releasing annually, players can look forward to significant additions to the Diablo 4 universe. These expansions will likely introduce new storylines, areas to explore, and gameplay mechanics. The exact details of the first paid expansion are yet to be revealed.
  • Quarterly Seasons: In addition to paid expansions, Diablo 4 will feature quarterly seasons. These seasons will bring fresh challenges, events, and rewards for players to engage with. It creates a sense of ongoing progression and ensures that the game remains exciting and dynamic throughout the year.

By combining the long-term content support of paid expansions with the regular updates offered by seasonal content, Diablo 4 aims to keep players engaged and invested in the game for years to come.

Building a Strong Foundation

As Fergusson emphasized, the first season of Diablo 4 is crucial in laying the groundwork for future expansions and seasons. It serves as a foundation upon which Blizzard can continue to build and expand the game’s universe.

Through these frequent content updates, Blizzard strives to deliver a constantly evolving and immersive Diablo 4 experience. By taking inspiration from Destiny 2 and adopting a live service approach, Blizzard aims to provide a game that continues to captivate players long after its initial release.

While the shift towards live service elements and annual expansions may mark a departure from Diablo’s past, it’s an exciting evolution that promises to deliver ongoing entertainment to fans of the franchise.
