Disney Cancels Two TV Shows for Disney+
Disney has made the decision to cancel two upcoming TV shows that were set to stream on its popular service, Disney+. The shows in question are The Spiderwick Chronicles and Nautilus, both of which had already completed filming for their first seasons.
The Spiderwick Chronicles
The Spiderwick Chronicles is a live-action adaptation of the beloved children’s fantasy book series. Disney had announced the series at Disney+ Day 2021, but now it seems that the project will not move forward on the streaming platform. The series, which had already finished filming its first season, is now being shopped around to other potential buyers by Paramount.
Last year, Variety reported that Jack Dylan Grazer, known for his roles in It! and the DCU Shazam! films, was cast in the series. However, with Disney’s cancellation, it remains uncertain whether the show will find a new home.
Nautilus
Nautilus is a UK live-action Captain Nemo series that was also announced by Disney in 2021. Like The Spiderwick Chronicles, filming for Nautilus had already been completed. However, Disney has decided not to move forward with the series on Disney+.
Both cancellations are a result of Disney’s “strategic realignment,” which began earlier this year when Disney CEO Bob Iger announced significant cost-cutting measures. In an effort to reduce over $5 billion in costs, Disney planned to cut $3 billion in non-sports content on its streaming service.
While these cancellations may disappoint fans, it is important to note that Disney’s decision is part of a broader strategy to streamline its content offerings. As the streaming landscape continues to evolve, companies like Disney are constantly reassessing their portfolios to ensure they provide the most compelling and financially viable content to their subscribers.
As always, stay tuned for more updates on Disney+ and its ever-growing original programming lineup.
