Magic Leap 1 AR Headset to Cease Function by Late 2024

Magic Leap 1, the AR headset that garnered significant attention and attracted over three billion dollars in funding, is set to become obsolete by the end of next year. The Plantation, Florida-based startup announced this week that the headset’s cloud services will be shut down on December 31st, 2024, rendering the device unusable with no further support.

The discontinuation of cloud services signifies that the Magic Leap 1 headset will essentially be “bricked” on that date, as its core functionality will cease to exist. This decision was revealed in a recent FAQ released by the company.

Furthermore, on September 29th, 2023, several developer resources will also be pulled, including the Magic Leap 1 Developer Forum and the headset’s dedicated Discord channel. The company’s full statement, provided by Reddit user ‘The Golden Leaper’, can be found below:

Today we are announcing that Magic Leap 1 end of life date will be December 31, 2024. Magic Leap 1 is no longer available for purchase, but will continue to be supported through December 31, 2024 as follows:

• Magic Leap 1 Developer Forum: On September 29th, 2023, Magic Leap 1 Developer Forum will no longer be available. Please refer to the Magic Leap 2 Developer Forum for current information and updates on the Magic Leap platform.
• Magic Leap Discord channel: On September 29th, 2023, Magic Leap Discord channel will no longer be available. Please refer to the Magic Leap 2 Developer Forum for current information and updates on the Magic Leap platform.
• OS Updates: Magic Leap will only address outages that impact core functionality (as determined by Magic Leap) until December 31, 2024.
• Customer Care: Magic Leap will continue to offer product troubleshooting assistance through December 31, 2024.
• Warranties: Valid warranty claims under the Magic Leap 1 Warranty Policy will be honored.

Although Magic Leap 1 is no longer being sold by the company, it was available for purchase until mid-2022. The company liquidated brand new units, including the headset’s compute unit and controller, for the discounted price of $550 via Amazon subsidiary Woot. While it remains uncertain how many developers and enterprise users will be affected by the shutdown, they have a little over a year to devise a replacement strategy.

Magic Leap initially released the ML 1 headset in 2018, positioning it between enterprise and prosumer markets. Despite gaining moderate attention, the high price tag of $2,300 and limited differentiation from Microsoft HoloLens resulted in a lukewarm reception. The company eventually shifted its focus towards targeting enterprise customers with its latest AR headset, Magic Leap 2, following a leadership change in mid-2020.
