Baldur’s Gate 3, the complex RPG developed by Larian Studios, is set to make its debut on the PlayStation 5. Despite its intricate gameplay and interface, the studio has revealed that the game was specifically designed for the PS5 from day one, ensuring a seamless gaming experience for console players.
In an interview with product manager Emily Gera on the , she discussed how the team at Larian Studios adapted the game to work well with a controller. Gera explained, “Your most essential tools can be accessed at the pull of a trigger button, which brings up a large radial for access to your map, journal, spellbook, character sheet, combat log, alchemy, short rests, long rests, and your camp, as well as your level-up screen and Illithid Powers skill tree.”
The game’s director, Swen Vincke, also shared his insights on the port in an interview with PlayStation Access. He emphasized that the team worked extensively to transform the user experience for console players, ensuring that the game would function seamlessly with a controller. Vincke mentioned that the feedback from PC players who have tried using a controller has been positive, indicating the effectiveness of the port.
Baldur’s Gate 3 offers players the option to control their avatar directly using the analog stick, simulating the experience of a standard third-person game. However, for those who prefer the classic point-and-click movement of the PC version, the port also includes a point-and-click mode. To enhance the console experience, the camera has been adjusted to provide a lower angle, resembling other action games on consoles. Additionally, players have the ability to zoom out with the right stick, offering a more traditional tactical view.
PS5 users will also enjoy a few exclusive features that take advantage of the console’s capabilities. The DualSense controller’s lightbar will illuminate and correspond with the spell being cast, creating an immersive visual experience. In moments of intense gameplay, the brightness of the lightbar will intensify, accompanied by haptic feedback, adding another layer of immersion. Moreover, different status effects will be represented by distinct colors on the DualSense lightbar.
The adaptive triggers on the DualSense controller also play a role in enhancing the gameplay experience. A slight pull of the trigger will display a portion of the radial menu, while a harder press will reveal the complete menu, providing players with easy access to a wide range of options.
