The Armored Core 6 PS4 port continues a FromSoftware tradition
FromSoftware, known for their critically acclaimed games like Dark Souls and Elden Ring, has a tradition of surprising players with their game ports. The latest example of this is with the Armored Core 6 PS4 port. Unlike other PS5 backward compatible games, the PS4 version of Armored Core 6 seems to run better and more stable on the PS5 than the native PS5 version.
Hacker and modder Lance McDonald brought this to light on Twitter, stating that when the PS4 version is played on a PS5, it runs at a locked 60 frames per second and is “much smoother than the native PS5 build.” This is contrary to Bandai Namco Entertainment’s claim that the PS4 Pro version would run at up to 30 frames per second at 1800p resolution. It’s possible that, like Elden Ring on the PS4 Pro, the frame rate is unlocked.
There seem to be some inconsistencies with Bandai Namco’s table as well, as only the PS4 and Xbox One X are listed as having HDR support, while the PS5 version of Armored Core 6 is described as supporting up to 60 frames per second and running at 4K resolution.
Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s previous game, faces a similar situation. McDonald mentioned in the same thread about Armored Core that he recently reverse engineered Elden Ring on the PS5 and found that the PS5 build has “no compiler optimizations whatsoever.” This could explain why the PS4 port running through backward compatibility performs better than the native PS5 version. For those who prefer physical formats, McDonald recommended buying the PS4 disc since it includes both versions, while the PS5 disc only unlocks the PS5 version.
Technical analysts Digital Foundry also discussed this issue with Elden Ring. They explained that playing the PS4 port on the PS5 was the best way to achieve 60 frames per second on PlayStation, but it came with visual trade-offs such as checkerboarded 1800p resolution, inferior shadows, and less floral density. Digital Foundry has yet to weigh in on Armored Core 6.
In conclusion, it seems that FromSoftware’s tradition of surprising players with their game ports continues with the Armored Core 6 PS4 version running better on the PS5 through backward compatibility. While the native PS5 version supports higher resolution and frame rate, it seems to have some performance issues. Players who prioritize smoothness may want to consider playing the PS4 version on their PS5.
