Empereur primarily follows a guided experience format, with events unfolding around the player. While a game cannot perfectly recreate such conditions, Empereur expertly blends speech therapy segments with surrealist dream sequences, providing players with a unique window into the father’s life.

A Compelling Parallel

Empereur draws parallels to Jean-Dominique Bauby’s memoir, “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,” which depicts his life before and after suffering a stroke that left him with locked-in syndrome. Though not a direct VR adaptation of Bauby’s tale, Empereur takes inspiration from Burger’s father and delivers a similar raw emotional impact. The VR experience conveys the father’s struggle and the tremendous effort required by his wife and daughter to pick up the pieces and continue their lives.

Through the dream sequences and stories about the father’s life, players gain an intimate understanding of his ordeal. At times, Empereur’s emotional resonance is so profound that it can move players to tears, demonstrating the remarkable connection that can be forged through VR storytelling.

Empereur recently made its debut at Venice Immersive in Italy, where it captivated audiences. According to Atlas V, the VR experience is set to release on the Quest Store on October 29, allowing a wider audience to embark on this emotional journey themselves.
