Warframe 1999: A Unique Blend of Metal Gear Solid, Dark Sector, and a Surprising Twist

Warframe 1999: A Blast from the Past

Warframe, the popular RPG game, is celebrating its ten-year legacy with the upcoming Whispers in the Dark update. But that’s not all! Players will also get to experience a blast from the past with Warframe 1999, a new story that takes us back to the very beginning of the Tenno’s saga. I had the opportunity to chat with creative director Rebecca Ford and Soulframe’s chief creative officer Steve Sinclair to learn more about this exciting update and its inspiration.

A Glimpse into the Future

At Digital Extremes’ London office, I was treated to an exclusive press preview of Warframe’s Whispers in the Dark update. The new world showcased the game’s unique flamboyance, but what caught my attention was an old ’90s PC sitting in the corner. As our Tenno protagonist activated Transference using this ancient technology, the screen faded to black, revealing a disheveled Solid Snake-looking protagonist struggling with something.

According to Ford, this new character is named Arthur, and both she and I couldn’t help but swoon over this “handsome hunk,” as Sinclair described him. The whole experience exudes ’90s vibes, with Nine Inch Nails’ “Into The Void” setting the mood. But why did Ford choose this nostalgic aesthetic? She explains that it’s partly inspired by her rosy childhood memories.

A Nostalgic Journey

“I was a wee lass then,” Ford says, with a nod to her Scottish heritage. “I was nine years old in 1999. It’s my favorite era of my life because I had no responsibilities! But, inspiration-wise, I really wanted to re-re-do the Dark Sector that was made – or not made!”

However, Ford emphasizes that Warframe 1999 is still very much Warframe. The only difference is that it’s set in 1999. She teases that players will have to wait and see how this new update truly captures the essence of the game. It’s an exciting new look for Warframe that aligns with the team’s goal of providing different experiences to players.
