Review of Oxenfree 2

The highly anticipated follow-up to the indie hit Oxenfree, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals, has finally arrived. Developed by Night School Studio, the same team responsible for the original game, expectations were high for this time-bending, coming-of-age adventure. While Lost Signals boasts great writing and compelling characters, it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as its predecessor.

A Familiar Recipe, But Some Key Ingredients Missing

Despite featuring many of the same ingredients as its predecessor, Oxenfree 2 doesn’t quite capture the soul and drama that made the first game so memorable. The full and truthful characters are there, but the writing falls short in delivering the same heartfelt and heart-wrenching experience. Additionally, the game suffers from some repetitive back-and-forth gameplay and a collection of too-clean endings, resulting in it falling into the “good but not great” category.

Netflix’s Push into Video Games

Oxenfree 2 joins the growing library of adventure games available on Netflix. Night School Studio was acquired by Netflix in 2021, making both the original game and its sequel available through the streaming service. This move by Netflix demonstrates its commitment to expanding its presence in the gaming industry.

Exploring Camena Coast with New Protagonists

Players step into the shoes of Riley and her new co-worker Jacob, two characters venturing into the mythos of Oxenfree. The game is set in Camena Coast, the hometown of the heroes from the first game, but a location never before explored. Riley, returning after several years away, and Jacob, a lifelong resident, bring their differing experiences to their conversations as they navigate the mysteries that unfold before them.

Tools and Gameplay Mechanics

Riley’s primary tools are a radio and walkie-talkies, which allow her to tune into various signals across Camena and interact with otherworldly entities. The game also introduces new puzzle mechanics, adding depth to the gameplay. However, some sections of the game can become laborious, especially when players are searching for collectibles in previously explored environments.

Characters That Reflect a Different Phase of Life

One notable change in Oxenfree 2 is the exploration of older characters facing adulthood’s challenges. Jake and Riley, two 30-somethings struggling with their own issues, bring a relatable aspect to the narrative. This shift in focus showcases that a coming-of-age story doesn’t have to be limited to teenagers.

Delving Into Camena’s Atmosphere and History

Camena plays a pivotal role in the game, almost becoming a character itself. The town’s fortunes and the passage of time are central themes, as players uncover its hidden secrets and unravel the stories embedded within its buildings and landmarks. The sense of place and atmosphere enhances the overall experience, providing players with a captivating setting.

Too Neat Endings and Lost Potential

While the game delivers on its exploration and storytelling, the multiple endings lack the ambiguity and sense of unease found in the first game. The conclusions feel too neat and fail to embrace the shifting nature of time travel and fate that the game builds upon.

An Engaging Experience Despite Its Flaws

Despite some stumbling blocks, Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is still worth playing and completing. Fans of the first game will appreciate the continuation of the story, while new players can easily catch up. The well-written, relatable narrative makes it an engaging experience, even with its shortcomings.

Conclusion

Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals may not quite live up to the high bar set by its predecessor, but it still offers an enjoyable adventure with compelling characters and a captivating setting. While some aspects fall short, the game delivers a worthwhile experience that fans of the original and newcomers alike can appreciate. So grab your radio, tune in, and embark on another haunting journey through the mysteries of Oxenfree.

Note: Oxenfree 2: Lost Signals is available on Android, iOS, PC, PS4, PS5, and Switch.
