Europa Universalis IV Premise

Europa Universalis IV is a grand strategy game that was originally developed based on a French board game of the same name. Created by Phillipe Thibault in 1993, the video game adaptation was developed using a proprietary software engine called the “Europa Engine” and was released on January 23, 2001.

In Europa Universalis IV, players take control of one of seven European nations (with other countries available in different scenarios) between the years 1492 and 1801. The goal of the game is to expand your power through military might, diplomacy, and colonial wealth. The game’s map consists of 3,633 provinces, and the action unfolds in a pausable, real-time development cycle.

At the beginning of the game, the map is two-dimensional and divided into provinces and sea zones. While a section of the map is unavailable at the start, players can explore individual provinces. After choosing a European country to play as, you assume the role of the corresponding historical ruler for that country.

The game features a number of playable historical events, including The Treaty of Tordesillas and the Reformation. As the player, you control your country’s budget and can allocate funds to various realms of government such as defense, research, and treasuries.

There are four different types of technology that can be increased and earned during the game: army, navy, infrastructure, and trade. As you progress, you unlock new capabilities. However, one of your biggest concerns as the leader of a nation should be the possibility of rebellion among the population. These rebellions can be caused by discrepancies between the state and the religion followed in a province, taxation issues, or other events that occur throughout gameplay. Groups of rebels can also arise and affect gameplay, with attempts to secede or declare independence.

One of the most valuable aspects of the game is the exploration of uninhabited territories. This can be done using conquistadors and explorers that your country has at its disposal.
