Catch Revealed: Baldur’s Gate 3 Arriving on Xbox this Year

Baldur’s Gate 3 Coming to Xbox Series X/S Before Year-End, Series S Version to Lack Split-Screen Co-op

Baldur’s Gate 3, the highly anticipated RPG from Larian Studios, is set to release on Xbox Series X/S consoles before the end of the year, according to CEO Swen Vincke. However, there is a catch for Series S owners, as the game will launch without split-screen co-op on that platform.

The game is already available on PC and is scheduled to release on PS5 in early September, with pre-orders skyrocketing shortly after its initial release. The excellent reviews Baldur’s Gate 3 has received since its launch have undoubtedly contributed to its popularity.

Previously, fans were unsure about the Xbox release date, with some speculating that it was due to PlayStation console exclusivity. However, Vincke clarified that the delay was necessary to ensure that all of Baldur’s Gate 3’s features would work seamlessly on the Xbox Series ecosystem. The Xbox Series S, in particular, was reportedly struggling to handle the game’s intense co-op feature, which allows players to embark on a Dungeons and Dragons-like campaign and explore different areas of the game simultaneously.

Vincke recently met with Xbox’s Phil Spencer to discuss bringing Baldur’s Gate 3 to the Xbox platform. The good news is that the Series X version of the game will have complete parity with the PC version, including all improvements and split-screen co-op. Unfortunately, the Series S version will not feature split-screen co-op, disappointing players hoping to enjoy the game with friends on the couch. However, they will still be able to play co-op online.

Furthermore, the Xbox Series S will support cross-save progression, allowing fans to access their characters across Steam, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S. This is particularly beneficial for Series S users who travel with their console and use the Series X at home. While it may be a compromise, it is likely a feature that many fans can live with.

Vincke did not provide an exact release date for Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox, but with approximately four months remaining in the year, fans can expect this news relatively soon. Although it is unlikely to release in early September alongside the PS5 version, having confirmation that it will happen in 2023 is better than the previous uncertainty.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PC and will release for PS5 on September 6. The Xbox Series X/S versions are expected to launch before the end of the year.
