Hi-Fi Rush turned us up to 11 before we even knew what hit us.
In one of the year’s biggest surprise releases, Tango Gameworks – a studio that cut its teeth on the paranormal genre with excellent projects like Evil Within 1 & 2 and Ghostwire: Tokyo – launched Hi-Fi Rush and served notice that its talented group of game developers were much more than just “a horror game studio.” Hi-Fi Rush was brash, bold, colorful, and most importantly, fun!
This incredible project — which had been developed in secret at Tango for nearly five years — pleasantly knocked its custom-built guitar over our heads with its crisp, rhythm-based gameplay, excellent soundtrack, and memorable characters, all wrapped up in a unique world for us to explore.
Because of its “shadow drop” release, it bucked the trend of a preview circuit (announce, hands-on previews, etc.) so we haven’t had a chance to follow the game’s creation – until now.
Xbox Wire was given exclusive access to talk to the heads of development at Tango Gameworks to bring you this unique, behind-the-scenes look at the inception of an idea as it moves through the entire creative process, right up to its full release.

The Journey Begins: John Johanas’ Vision
Every great game starts with an idea, and Hi-Fi Rush was no exception. Game Director John Johanas, known for his work on the Evil Within series, pitched the concept to the heads of Tango Gameworks, who were intrigued by his passion and enthusiasm for a non-horror project. Johanas envisioned a rhythm-based game that would combine crisp gameplay mechanics with a vibrant audio-visual experience.
To demonstrate his vision, Johanas worked closely with Lead Programmer Yuji Nakamura to create an initial prototype that showcased the potential of Hi-Fi Rush. This prototype became the framework on which the entire development process would build upon.
Building the Beats: Rhythm-Based Gameplay
The core of Hi-Fi Rush lies in its rhythm-based gameplay, which challenges players to hit precise notes in sync with the electrifying soundtrack. In order to accomplish this, the team incorporated various difficulty levels that cater to different players’ abilities. Beginners can start with basic rhythm patterns, while more experienced players can challenge themselves with complex and intricate arrangements. The inclusion of adaptive difficulty ensures that players are always engaged and pushed to their limits.
A Visual Symphony: Art and Design
Lead Art Director Keita Sakai played a pivotal role in shaping the visual identity of Hi-Fi Rush. Inspired by the vibrant and exaggerated art styles of classic rock album covers, Sakai aimed to create a world that celebrates music in all its glory.
The game’s environments are a feast for the eyes, filled with psychedelic landscapes, neon-lit stages, and fantastical creatures. Sakai and his team aimed to strike a delicate balance between visual spectacle and gameplay clarity, ensuring that the stunning visuals enhance the player’s experience rather than hinder it.
To achieve this, extensive playtesting was conducted to gather feedback on level designs and visual cues. The result is a seamlessly integrated audio-visual journey that immerses players in the pulsating rhythm of Hi-Fi Rush.

Audio Director Shuichi Kobori’s task was to create a soundtrack that would perfectly complement the gameplay while delivering an unforgettable auditory experience. Kobori’s passion for rock music drove him to meticulously select a diverse range of songs that would resonate with players and evoke the feeling of being in a live concert.
Collaborating with renowned musicians and composers, the team curated a collection of high-energy rock tracks that span various subgenres and eras, ensuring that there is something for every music lover.
