Baldur’s Gate 3 Dev Reacts To Suggestion That Xbox ‘Misjudged’ The Game’s Potential

Baldur’s Gate 3 has emerged as one of the biggest success stories of 2023, leaving many to speculate whether Xbox may have underestimated the game’s potential. It was recently suggested that Microsoft may have “misjudged” the game, but the developers behind it don’t necessarily fault the tech giant for their initial assessment.

In a Polygon report about the recent Xbox leak, Microsoft’s description of Baldur’s Gate 3 back in 2022 as a “second-run Stadia PC RPG” seemed to imply a lack of “wow factor” for Xbox Game Pass. However, Michael Douse, Director of Publishing at Larian Studios, the developers of Baldur’s Gate 3, tweeted in response to this suggestion, shedding some light on the situation.

Douse acknowledged that the game had been misjudged by many, including Microsoft, but he also explained that the genre itself presents certain challenges. He emphasized that Baldur’s Gate 3, and even their previous game Divinity: Original Sin 2, defy easy categorization and conventional expectations. Douse’s tweet read, “In their defence, so did everyone else. Comes with the genre, and the way we approach things, and the way we execute things. There just isn’t any existing data that could have told anyone how BG3 was going to perform. We just had to take giant spooky leaps.”

So, it seems that Douse doesn’t hold Microsoft solely responsible for underestimating the potential success of Baldur’s Gate 3. Nonetheless, there were some setbacks in bringing the game to Xbox Series X|S.

Larian Studios had plans to release a port of Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox Series X|S, but these plans were derailed due to issues with the Series S version specifically. Although it wasn’t an ideal situation, the team made the tough decision to announce that the Series S version wouldn’t support local co-op upon release. Despite these obstacles, Baldur’s Gate 3 is still on track to arrive on Xbox consoles before the end of 2023.

The Road to Success

To say that the journey of Baldur’s Gate 3 has been rocky would be an understatement. However, the game’s immense success is a testament to the dedication and passion of the developers at Larian Studios.

It’s worth noting that Baldur’s Gate 3 was highly anticipated even before its release. The game builds upon the rich legacy of the previous Baldur’s Gate titles, and its development was closely watched by fans and critics alike. As players delved into the vast and immersive world of Baldur’s Gate 3, it became evident that the game had surpassed all expectations.

Looking Ahead

The fact that Baldur’s Gate 3 is coming to Xbox Series X|S is undoubtedly exciting news for fans of the game and Xbox console owners. Despite the initial misjudgment by some, Microsoft has recognized the game’s potential and is committed to bringing it to Xbox players.

As we eagerly await the arrival of Baldur’s Gate 3 on Xbox consoles, it’s important to remember that sometimes even the most successful games face unexpected challenges. However, the developers’ unwavering dedication and the support of the players have allowed this highly anticipated RPG to overcome any obstacles in its path.
