Chronological and Release Order of All Dragon Age Games: A Comprehensive Compilation

Dragon Age is a fantasy RPG series developed by BioWare and is considered a spiritual successor to the studio’s earlier games like Baldur’s Gate. While the first game was released before the Mass Effect series, many view Dragon Age as the fantasy counterpart to BioWare’s sci-fi RPG trilogy. The series shares mechanics, such as a morality system and branching dialogue trees, with other BioWare titles like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and Jade Empire.

Inspired by both Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy novels, particularly George R. R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire, Dragon Age takes place in the world of Thedas. In addition to the mainline titles, there were several web browser Flash games and a mobile game associated with the series. However, all but one of these games have been shut down and are no longer playable. A fourth mainline game, Dragon Age Dreadwolf, is currently in development, but its release date is unknown.

Dragon Age: Origins, released in 2009 for PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Mac OS X, introduced players to the world of Thedas and established many gameplay mechanics that would become staples of the series. The game was both a commercial success and highly acclaimed by critics, marking a return to form for BioWare.

Dragon Age Journeys, a flash-based web browser game released in 2009, was intended to connect to Dragon Age: Origins but only one chapter was released. The game featured grid-based tactical RPG gameplay and rewarded players with in-game items for Origins.

Dragon Age: Origins – Awakening, released in 2010 for multiple platforms, was a standalone expansion that takes place after the events of the main game. It introduced new gameplay elements, including a new class specialization and increased level cap.

Dragon Age II, released in 2011 for multiple platforms, represented a significant departure from its predecessor. BioWare made changes to the core gameplay based on fan feedback, resulting in a switch to full action-RPG combat and a more streamlined experience. While some appreciated the changes, others missed what made the first game great.

Dragon Age Legends, released in 2011 as a tie-in with Dragon Age II, was another web browser game with tactical RPG gameplay. It offered in-game rewards for Dragon Age II but was ultimately shut down.

Heroes of Dragon Age, released in 2013 for iOS and Android devices, is the only mobile title in the series. It is a squad-based strategy game that features characters and plot points from the franchise.

Dragon Age: The Last Court, released in 2014 as a web browser game, is a resource-management card game with a dedicated fanbase. Unfortunately, the game was shut down in November 2020.

Dragon Age: Inquisition, released in 2014 for multiple platforms, is considered one of the best games in the series. It corrected the missteps of Dragon Age II and received praise from fans. Players assume the role of the Inquisitor and must navigate political and military challenges to stop a cataclysmic event.

Inquisition’s gameplay is more similar to Origins than Dragon Age II, with players creating their character and assigning a race and class. Combat is not turn-based but includes auto behaviors based on character class and party composition. Players can also pause and make tactical decisions.
