A Guide to Defeating Nere and Recruiting Elder Brithvar in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 Guide: How to Complete the Nere Quests and Rescue Nere

Baldur’s Gate 3 offers players several areas to explore, and one of these is the Myconid Colony. In this colony, players will come across a drow named Nere who is causing problems. There are two quests centered around Nere: “Deliver Nere’s Head” and “Free True Soul Nere.”

Overview of the Quests

Both quests are part of Act One and can be initiated while exploring the Underdark. The quest “Free True Soul Nere” is likely to start first. While exploring, the party will hear about a True Soul trapped in a cave-in. This will trigger the first quest, and the second one can be picked up by speaking with the Sovereign.

How to Begin “Free True Soul Nere”

Upon reaching Grymforge, players will hear about a trapped True Soul in a cave. This information will add the quest to the available side quests. Players should then head to the cave to free the True Soul. On the way, they will encounter a Duergar named Elder Brithvar who will try to extort money from the party with the help of another Duergar.

To ensure an easier time, players should play along for now and affirm their dislike for Nere. Successfully doing so will allow Elder Brithvar to offer an additional objective involving killing Nere and splitting his money.

For players who want a larger share of the profits obtained from Nere, it is worth attempting a successful persuasion check during the conversation with Elder Brithvar.

How to Gather Explosives From Philomeen

If players have Smokepowder Bombs, they can use two of them to clear the cave-in quickly. However, it is important to warn the nearby gnomes, who may not listen to the warning. Not using Smokepowder Bombs or wanting to save them for later, players should find Philomeen, who has a barrel of explosives.

To find Philomeen’s hiding spot, players should head back toward the docks and look for Duergar tossing bodies into the water. Convince them to leave so the lock on the double doors nearby can be picked. Inside, players will find a secret door opened by pressing a button on the far right corner of the wall. Follow the path and find another pair of large double doors. Lockpick these doors as well to find Philomeen. Players should speak with her and calm her down to obtain the Runepowder.

How to Rescue Nere From the Cave-In

The next step is to rescue Nere, but players should be careful not to let him succumb to the poisonous gas. After connecting minds with Nere near the rubble, players can use the Runepowder to free him by igniting it with a spell like the Burning Hands Spell. Once free, players should be ready to decide whether to side with Nere or kill him.

Choosing to Side With Nere or Kill Him

Given Nere’s cruelty, most players will likely choose to kill him. If players accepted Elder Brithvar’s offer earlier, they can still kill Nere with his help. This completes the “Free True Soul Nere” quest, and players can loot Nere’s body. For players who started the “Deliver Nere’s Head” quest, now is the time to pick up his head. Nere should also have an Illithid parasite, which players should collect.

For players who prefer to side with Nere, this means fighting Elder Brithvar and his companions. Afterward, Nere will attempt to kill the gnomes, and players can either persuade him not to or let the events unfold. Failing to convince him will expose the player as a traitor, leading to a fight against Nere and the Duergar.

After completing the quests, players will receive rewards, including the Illithid parasite. The choices made throughout the quests will have consequences, so players should consider their decisions carefully as they progress through Baldur’s Gate 3.

Remember, this is just one way to complete the quests, and the game offers multiple paths and outcomes based on the player’s choices.
